Russian Dawn was a publication of the Samara Organization of the Party of Democratic Union. With articles typed up on a typewriter, separated by ruler drawn lines, and then laid out with tape and a hand-drawn name in ancient fonts, it represents the kind of urgent new publishing that glasnost made possible. Samara is a city of 1.2 million people 650 miles east of Moscow on the Volga River.
