This paper was started in 1992 by a young group of professional journalists who left Nezavisimaia Gazeta (The Independent Newspaper) to start a publication thoroughly contemporary in its typography, design, and style. Below the blocky, courier masthead it announces its identity as a “political and business daily newspaper.” This issue’s quote of the day is from Berthold Brecht: “Above all, they are not great political criminals, but simply those who commit great political crimes. And this is something completely different.”
