This is the first issue of the newspaper of the Press-Center of the “Moscow Memorial” society. Memorial was the principal organization to emerge during the glasnost era dedicated to researching and writing the history of the purges and more generally, the repression of human rights in the Soviet Union. It has accumulated enormous archives on the Stalinist era, and has opened affiliate organizations all around the former Soviet Union. Its critical attitude towards Stalin has made it a target for Putin and his allies.
