Буревестник (Storm Petrel), October 1992

In European folklore this sea bird has symbolized the approach of stormy weather. In the 19th century, as multiple “storms” ravaged European societies, the name began to appear in revolutionary and anarchist literature as signals of looming, radical change. Literally it means, “the announcer of storms,” and appeared in songs, poems, and essays in praise of the visionaries who predicted revolution. It was the honorary title given to the Soviet writer, Maxim Gorky. The newspaper is a “newspaper of the opposition” in Rostov oblast’, affiliated with the “Rostov Labor Movement.”
